Tsan Yuk Hospital was first established in 1922 by the London Missionary Society, providing maternity services to the community. It became a government hospital in 1934. Three years later, it became a teaching hospital of The University of Hong Kong, providing training for medical students; post-graduate training and research facilities for doctors; and obstetric training for student nurses. Its obstetric professional training was recognised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The Tsan Yuk Hospital at Hospital Road was opened in June 1955 and it had become a well-known maternity hospital providing high quality obstetric service and neonatal services.
The obstetric and newborn inpatient services of Tsan Yuk Hospital were relocated to Queen Mary Hospital in November 2001 with a view to enhancing the quality and cost effectiveness of the clinical services. The relocation has marked an important milestone for this famous maternity hospital. Currently, Tsan Yuk Hospital has now been transformed into a day centre providing outpatient and day services. Furthermore, the Hospital also collaborates with the Maternal Child and Health Centres of Department of Health to provide shared antenatal care for low risk obstetric patients.
The Hospital's Day Centre provides ambulatory care for antenatal patients. In addition, the centre also conducts health education programmes for patients. Such programmes include care of newborns, diet for pregnant women and family planning. The following services are provided at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology:
Antenatal Care
Postnatal Care
Antenatal Talk
Menopause Clinic
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Clinic
General Gynaecology Clinic
Urogynaecology Clinic
The Prenatal Diagnostic and Counselling Department provides prenatal diagnostic and counselling services to women at risk of giving birth to babies with congenital abnormalities. Its Mrs. Wu Chung Prenatal Diagnostic Laboratory has enrolled with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia Quality Assurance Programme in Cytogenetics to ensure that laboratory test results meet international standards.
In keeping with the modern trend of providing comprehensive coverage of health care services for clients throughout their life-time, the Lady Helen WOO Women's Diagnostic and Treatment Centre was established in 1996. The Centre offers high standard, centralised and comprehensive specialised diagnostic, treatment and counselling services to women who have gynaecological abnormalities detected on health screening. A Breast Screening Referral Centre was also established in 1999 to provide mammography service to women at high risk of developing breast cancer. The Lady Helen WOO Women's Diagnostic and Treatment Centre has been managed by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of the University of Hong Kong as from 1 March 2004.
In March 2000, the Integrated Clinic of Hong Kong West Cluster commenced operation in Tsan Yuk Hospital providing comprehensive and holistic care for patients with stable chronic illness by family medicine doctors.
