MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre was opened in 1984 by the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation. Comprehensive rehabilitation programmes for all types of physically-disabled persons are provided by the centre's team of physicians, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists and orthotists, speech therapist, clinical psychologist and medical social workers.
Continued long-term care is also available for those with major disabilities, such as major head injuries, strokes, tetraplegics, paraplegics and amputees after their discharge from the hospital. The centre has also been designated by the World Health Organisation as one of the Collaborating Centres for the South East Asian and Western Pacific region in 1986 to provide consultation and training facilities in medical rehabilitation for the region. There is a very close link with the University of Hong Kong and the parent organisation - the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, to conduct many joint projects in specialised and community-based rehabilitation services.
The Centre has 150 medical rehabilitation beds, including 20 beds for day rehabilitation service. Some patients may even go home during weekends and public holidays.
A unique feature of the Centre's services is that its multidisciplinary team works out a comprehensive and individually tailored rehabilitation programme for each patient after they have received initial/acute treatment in other hospitals. This rehabilitative care service is part of the strategy to help patients achieve self-reliance and full reintegration back into society.
Life-long follow-up Management Programmes have been implemented since 1995 for spinal cord injuries and amputees in this Centre.
