Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) was opened in October 1993. It is named after Lady Youde, the wife of Sir Edward Youde, in recognition of his deep commitment and affection for Hong Kong people. The predecessor of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital formerly at Bonham Road in Mid-Levels, was founded over 100 years ago as the first hospital in Hong Kong devoted to treating Chinese patients according to western medical principles.
The entire complex of PYNEH occupies a site area of 150,000 square metres. It is a major acute hospital serving the eastern district of Hong Kong Island. It provides a comprehensive range of services, including 24-hour Accident and Emergency service, inpatient, outpatient and community out-reach services. As of 30 June 2005, there are a total number of 1,829 beds and a staff force of over 3,000.
Advanced facilities available at the hospital include 3 dimensional computerized tomography scan, x-knife, gamma camera, linear accelerator, brachy therapy, and cardiac catheterization laboratory and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The entire hospital is centrally air-conditioned and many amenities are available including landscaped gardens, 24-hour convenience store, visitor carpark, patients library, etc. Innovative systems have been implemented, including an integrated medical record system, a hospital-wide computerized information technology system and a computerized drug administration system. All these support and enhance the management quality and efficiency of the hospital's various services.
